The Biggest Advance in Over 100 years
and of Great Historical Importance
In Understanding
Science
The Scientific Method – Scientific Method
Reliable Knowledge
Problem Solving and Decision Making
A Great Many Other Activities
“Facts”
Science is its method – the scientific method – the basic method, guide, and system by which we originate, refine, extend, and apply knowledge in all fields. The method is a general method of problem solving, decision making, and establishing reliable knowledge in all fields.
Misunderstandings About the Scientific Method and Falsification of Them
Claims are made that the scientific method does not exist, that it is a rigid method, that there is no one method, and that the way to teach science is as inquiry, ignoring the scientific method. Although these claims are made by authoritative people and organizations, they are misunderstandings and are easily proven false. See my Research Report #20 “The Scientific Method – False Claims That It Does Not Exist.”
The Accumulation of Our Huge Body of Knowledge about Science and Scientific Method
This has developed extensively in the last 100 years, but, even though it produced hundreds and even thousands of model formulas for the scientific method, none was accurate and complete enough to be a standard for national teaching and lesson plans on scientific method.
Modern Historically Significant Research of the Scientific Method
In a 1865 letter to T.H. Huxley, Charles Darwin said, “I sometimes think that general and popular Treatises are almost as important for the progress of science as original work.” While Edmund’s “Treatises” on the scientific method are not as important as original works, they do fill an important need for correcting the misunderstandings about the scientific method and lack of material for proper lessons on the scientific method.

Edmund’s main treatise: End the Biggest Educational and Intellectual Blunder
in History (2005).
From 1989 to 2008, Norman W. Edmund, founder of Edmund Scientific Co., has devoted his full time to a second career – specialized research of a model guide and explanation of the scientific method. The results are presented on this website in a form suitable for teaching the scientific method to students and for the public to understand.
Edmund’s Research Produced the Best Ever Model Guide for the Scientific
Method
The biggest advance in over 100 years in the understanding of and teaching the scientific method is the presentation below of his model formula for the scientific method, SM-14.
Steps or Stages
1. Curious Observation
2. Is There a Problem?
3. Goals and Planning
4. Search, Explore, and Gather the Evidence
5. Generative Creative and Logical Alternative Solutions
6. Evaluate the Evidence
7. Make the Educated Guess (Hypothesis)
8. Challenge the Hypothesis
9. Reach a Conclusion
10. Suspend Judgment
11. Take Action
Supporting Ingredients
12. Creative, Non-Logical, Logical, and Technical Methods

The Importance of the Historical Event of this Presentation of the SM-14 Model Formula
This springs from the “fact” that it enables a unity of accurate thought about the scientific method in all domains and thus how science, problem solving, and decision making should be taught and used. Its importance is better understood when you consider all the other activities that are called by other names but really are the scientific method, as explained in Research Report #4. The results of teaching the scientific method, when eventually applied to millions of problem solving and decision making activities every day and origination of reliable knowledge, have the potential to make this world a much better place to live. Using the scientific method will also result in better problem solving and decision making that can immensely improve public policy.
The Tremendous Importance of This to You
Applying the scientific method to your personal activities can greatly increase your personal success and happiness. Allying it in your career activities can result in promotions, increased earnings, improved reputation and leadership, enabling you to out-perform your associates and competitors.
Help Spread the News about SM-14
Because of the misunderstandings about the scientific method, the acceptance of SM-14 has been slow. So tell your friends and students about SM-14, a more accurate presentation of the best idea of all time.
