Research Report #3

Scientific Method Steps:
Questions About Specific Numbers of Steps

People often ask about the scientific method and specify a certain number of steps. This research report will help them.

The First Step in the Scientific Method

Similar questions asked are:

First step in the scientific method
First step of the scientific method
The first step in the scientific method
The first step of the scientific method
What is the first step in the scientific method

For a two-page description of the first step or stage of the scientific method, see Step or Stage #1 – Curious Observation – in my booklet The Scientific Method Today.

4 Steps to the Scientific Method

The eleven stage or step method described in The Scientific Method Today booklet has an abbreviated four step or stage version for less important or urgent problems or decisions. This is explained on the page Intuition and a Short Model – SM-4 in The Scientific Method Today. It has these steps or stages:

SM-4
1. Problem (Step or Stage 2 of SM-14)
2. Alternatives (Step or Stage 5 of SM-14)
3. Evaluate (Step or Stage 6 of SM-14)
4. Challenge (Step or Stage 8 of SM-14)

The page entitled Scientific Method Steps. . . A Complete Act of Thought in the front of my booklet The Scientific Method Today presents the well-known four-step “art of thought formula” of Wallas (1926).

Other 4-step methods will be found in my Research Report #11 “Steps of the Scientific Method – Model Formulas from the Literature.”

The 5 Steps of the Scientific Method

Similar questions people ask are:

The five steps of the scientific method
Five steps of the scientific method
Five steps to the scientific method
The 5 steps to the scientific method
5 steps of the scientific method
5 steps in the scientific method
5 steps to the scientific method

These questions are all essentially the same. You will find a formula containing five steps for the scientific method in my Research Report #11 “Steps of the Scientific Method – Model  Formulas from the Literature.”

However, I recommend that you study SM-14, which is presented here. It has eleven steps, better called stages, plus three supporting ingredients.

The 6 Steps of the Scientific Method

Questions asked are:

The 6 steps of the scientific method
6 steps of the scientific method
6 steps to the scientific method
Six steps of the scientific method
Six steps in the scientific method
6 steps of scientific method
6 steps to scientific method

6 Steps in the Scientific Method

These are all requesting the same information. The SM-14 model formula for the scientific method presented on this website is superior to a six-step one.

A six-step formula will be found in my Research Report #11 “Steps of the Scientific Method – Model Formulas from the Literature.”

7 Steps of the Scientific Method

Questions asked are:

The 7 steps of the scientific method
Seven steps of the scientific method
Seven steps to the scientific method
7 steps of the scientific method
7 steps in the scientific method
7 steps of the scientific method
The 7 steps to the scientific method
The 7 steps in the scientific method

Seven Steps to the Scientific Method

These are all essentially just requesting a seven-step method. SM-14, described on this website, is the best model formula available and I recommend that you use it.

A seven-step formula will be found in my Research Report #11 “Steps of the Scientific Method - Model Formulas from the Literature.”

8 Steps of the Scientific Method

Again, SM-14 is the best one to study. My Research Report #11 “Steps of the Scientific Method – Model  Formulas from the Literature” contains formulas with 8 or more stages.
